History of the Koloa Church

The first missionaries arrived in Kauai around the year 1820.  They were brought to the island by George Kaumuali'i, son of King Kaumuali'i, the last ruling monarch of Kauai before King Kamehameha I took control and united all of Hawai'i.  George had been sent by his father to the United States to be educated in New England.  During these early times, people met in their homes and were visited occasionally by the missionaries who were in Waimea.

The Reverand Peter J. Guilick began the mission in Koloa in 1834.  With no official house of worship, they lived closely with each other in thatched houses and worked on the idea of building a church of there own.  In 1837, they built a chapel on the premises where the current church now stands.  Its original dimensions where 95 feet in length by 40 feet in width with an 8 foot lanai that went completely around the chapel.

Native Hawaiians came to the services from as far as Mahaulepu to Hanapepe and Koloa Beach to Ku'ia. These people, some on horseback, but mostly on foot, came all that way just to hear the Word of God.  Reports say that the early congregation numbered from nine to fifteen hundred.

The chapel served the congregation until 1859 when it was torn down to make way for a new frame building.  This undertaking was carried to completion through the energy and devotion of Reverand James W. Smith, M.D.  He served as a missionary, pastor and doctor from 1842 to 1887.  This new and improved church served the congregation for 70 years.  It stood as a silent witness to all of the changes which have occured in the islands over the years.

It was recorded in the Missionary Herald of 1860 that this church stood on the high ground and could be seen from far out to sea, forming a landmark which ships used for navigating as they approached port.  In 1929, the church underwent repairs and was given a New England style finish.  The Ohia (Hawaiian wood) timbers hewn by the Hawaiians in those early years are still supporting this church in their former positions, with the exception of a few timbers.  (This text was taken from the writings of Judge Henry Blake.  Some content has been edited for grammar.)

We at Koloa Church desire to remain on high ground providing a place where people who are wrestling with the storms of life can come and find rest and peace.  We pray you will find that "higher ground" here at The Church at Koloa.

Ministries

The people involved in our ministries are ready to help you grow personally and enjoy the opportunities to celebrate together with your peers and family. Some people come because they enjoy the teaching and worship; others because they make new friends.

About Our Ministries:

Opportunities for Growth in Worship and the Word

“Adventure in the Bible” - Weekly Wednesday evening in-depth Bible Study on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Pastor Kilborn currently is doing an expositional study.

Christian Growth Hour - meets weekly on Sunday morning at 9:45 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. following the first morning worship service. This hour provides an opportunity for systematic, age-appropriate instruction, necessary for spiritual growth and accountability. The results of Sunday School must help those who engage in the learning process to live the LIFE God intends for them.

K.I.D.S. Church (Kid’s in Divine Service) - meets separately during the 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning service. This is for ages 3 - 11 years old. The purpose and philosophy of K.I.D.S. Church is to “reach kids with the Gospel until He comes.” What an awesome responsibility to teach our Kids about the Lord Jesus, and model the Christian life so that a strong foundation can be laid. Kids enjoy learning through music, games, object lessons, praise and worship.

Glow Youth Ministry (OKCGlow) - Is a gathering of youth who want to be the best that they can be for the Lord. Our fellowships offer both junior and senior high students the opportunity to engage in youth oriented, fun activities and apply relevant messages from the Bible to their lives. We are a Bible believing, Bible teaching group encouraging one another to shine our lights before others that they may glorify our Father in Heaven!

Men’s Ministry - Men's Ministry is designed to develop godly men by providing the opportunity to grow in their walk with the Lord through the study of the Word, worship, encouragement, discipleship and fellowship.

Women’s Ministry - It is a vehicle reaching out to women in our ever changing world. Women’s Ministry is designed for women to come together in fellowship, the study of God’s Word, worship, encouragement, discipling other women and young girls. There are unlimited roles women can play in their family’s lives, in the church and in the community, serving with joy and fulfillment.

About

Senior Pastors

Pastors Harold and Christine Kilborn

Pastors Harold and Christy are both from the islands. Pastor Harold was born and raised on the island of Oahu and Christy was born and raised on the island of Kauai. The Church At Koloa, which is an historical landmark, has been their first church to pastor since 1981. They have celebrated over 25 years of marriage and of ministry to the Lord at the Church At Koloa. Both Pastor Harold and Christy met, and graduated from Bethany University majoring in Biblical and Theological Studies. They have 2 children and 2 grandchildren.

Pastor Kilborn has been deeply involved in studying Apologetics the past 30 years (being greatly influenced by the great Dr. Walter Martin), and taught at the "Calvary Chapel Bible College" here on the island of Kauai in the past.

Pastor Kilborn has a passion for people to mature in the Lord and believes that expository teaching, going through the books of the Bible, verse by verse, is one of the best ways to mature in the Lord.

When he is not reading, studying and teaching the Word of God, Pastor Kilborn enjoys life to the fullest.  He has a passion for outdoor activities which include kayaking, deep sea and spear fishing, as well as swimming in the beautiful beaches of Kauai.  But his most enjoyable sport is boar hunting.
